Ensure sufficient quantity of high-grade coolant to prevent the rolls from getting over heated.
Arrange proper filtration for the coolant.
Never put the roll immediately on grinder after removing from the mill. It requires to be cooled properly before grinding.
After removal from the mill, the roll is in a hot condition. In that condition, do not keep the roll on its barrel but instead on its journals. Also ensure free air-flow around the barrel for fast and effective cooling.
Thermal shocks can be easily avoided by warming up the rolls before putting them into the mill.
In case of skidding, please grind the barrel sufficiently to remove any possible surface cracks. Rolls should be checked for cracks by acid etching before re-use.
Stress relieving of rolls is recommended after every re-grinding for four hours in an oil bath at 180 0 C for hardness upto 62 HRC and for 6 hours at 160 0 C for those above 62 HRC.
Remove at least 0.25mm material while re-grinding the rolls. This normally removes the work hardened layer and minor surface cracks.
